Three Contests open to homeschoolers  
sponsored by Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars

The following three contests are open to homeschoolers and will award scholarships/and or monetary prizes to the winners. Information for all contests can be obtained by emailing roberta@vfwpost1650.kscoxmail.com or bu calling VFW Post #1650 at 785-235-9073.

Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition (open to high school students)
Prizes and scholarships are awarded at the local, district, state and national level. Local winners will advance to the district competition, with the district winner competing at the state level and the state winner competing for college scholarships. State winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 1-5, 2014, to tour the city, meet our nation's leaders, be honored by the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary and receive their portion of $152,000 in national awards, the top scholarship being $30,000. To enter, students must write and record a three-to-five minute essay. The 2013-14 theme is "Why I'm Optimistic About Our Nation's Future." The recording (audio tape or audio CD) and the typed essay and entry form must be submitted to the Ladies Auxiliary VFW #1650 by Friday, November 1, 2013. Patriot's Pen Essay Competition (open for students in grade 6 through 8).
As above, students who win local, District and State competitions will advance to the national finals and compete for $46,000 in awards, with the winner receiving $5,000 plus an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the winner and a parent or guardian. The top 46 national winners all receive at least $500. To enter, students must write a 300-400 word essay on the 2013-14 theme "What Patriotism Means To Me" and submit it to Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post #1650 by Friday, November 1, 2013. The Young American Creative Patriotic Art (open to students grades 9 through 12)
This competition, now in its 30th year, encourages students to use artistic talents to express their patriotism. Entries are judged on factors including originality of concept and clarity of patriotic expression. No digital art will be accepted. Artwork must be on canvas or paper. As above, students who win local, District and State competitions will advance to the national finals and compete for $21,000 in awards, with the winner receiving $10,000. 2013 School pictures

Attention for those who wish to have school pictures:
The date of the photo shoot had to be changed. I will not be September 19th but Wednesday, September 25th (but same time and place).
Steven Hertzog Of Creative Road Studio (formerly Linwood Road Studio) has again agreed to take school pictures for TEACH. However, the photo shoot will take place with Veritas Christian School on  Wednesday, September 25th from 9:00- 11:00 am in the gymnasium at Veritas 256 N. Michigan Street, Lawrence 66044. The gymnasium is through the double doors of the main building.

Since the homeschool photos will occur between Veritas classes, there may be a short wait. Steven is asking for the names of all who will have their picture taken ahead of time. Please email Cathy Barfield no later than September 18th. The email should include the children's names, and a parent name with phone number and email. Steven will have all the names printed ahead of time. When you arrive, the student will be handed his pre-printed name with a bar code to hand to the photographer when it is their turn for pictures. This will ensure that your children will not get mixed up with the Veritas students. If you want a sibling shot taken besides the individual shots, I need to know that ahead of time so that another piece of paper (with bar code) with the siblings' names can be made up separately.

Payment is not required ahead of time. You will need to make arrangements with Cathy Barfield to pick up your proof sheets. The proof sheets consist of 4 poses to choose from. If you wish to order, the different packages and their cost will be indicated on the proof sheet. The proof sheet will indicate the due date for the order. You may drop off your order to Cathy or at Veritas (give to Linda Walton in the office) before the due date. When the pictures arrive, they will be given to Cathy to distribute. I will send email reminders but if you do not check your email frequently, then please make sure and indicate this to Cathy and she can either phone or text you.

Sewing classes

Sewing classes for homeschooler's will be offered again this year.  Both beginning and intermediate classes will be available, depending on enrollment.

Class day and times are still being determined. Friday morning/afternoon, at the Morris Center, worked well last year, so I will continue to make that an option.  Classes would meet during and around band, orchestra, and choir.  If there is enough interest, a class could be offered on Tuesday afternoons - during TLC, or Wednesday afternoons - also at Community Bible Chapel.

Each class will meet once a week for approx. 75 minutes.  The  class fee is $95.00 a semester.  Classes will start in mid September and run through November.  Given that we don't have to take days off for illness or weather - we should complete the course work by the end of November.   It would be my desire to not go into December, but we will if necessary.  Second  semester would begin mid January and go through late April.

Beginning Sewing:

The classes will cover hand and basic  machine sewing.  We will do one or two simple projects that will involve  straight machine stitching. To get the most from the class, the students will  need to practice newly learned techniques at home.

There will be  worksheets, general sewing practice, and project work to be completed outside of  class.  Assigned work is due the following week. A notebook, with all the  weekly assignments, notes, vocabulary, worksheets, etc. will be turned in at the  end of the semester.

Each student will need sewing  supplies, a one-inch binder, a portable sewing machine that can be brought to  class each week, and fabric/notions/etc. for an assigned project.

Intermediate Sewing:

These classes will continue where the beginning level left  off.  There will be more seam finishes and hand sewing techniques covered, as well as basic garment construction.  One or two projects will be  completed in this class.  The format of this level will be much like the  beginning level – worksheets, practicing new and old techniques, and project work to be done outside of class.  We will continue to add to the notebook  that was started in the beginning level.

Primary Spanish
Class for 1st-3rd grades presents a rich exposure to Spanish through stories, songs, games, Bible verses, and activities – and each year there are new ones! Children quickly assimilate an impressive repertoire of expressions, greetings, and storytelling vocabulary and also receive an introduction to culture and missions. 
Cost: $100/semester, all materials included.
Wednesdays, 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.

Elementary Spanish
Students in 4th-6th grades love to learn Spanish through storytelling! They will listen to, write, dramatize, and illustrate stories, as well as design original fun narratives. Their boundless creativity propels language acquisition. This class will include missions, geography, culture, and Bible memory.
Cost: $100/semester; text optional.
Wednesdays, 10:45 a.m. – 12:00 noon.
Both elementary groups meet for two semesters; first semester is September 5 – November 28.
Spanish I
The storytelling method catches the imagination of high school students and accelerates the learning process as they quickly begin to use the language rather than simply memorize grammar rules or vocabulary lists. To earn high school credit students will meet once a week for two hours during a full school year and should expect daily homework and weekly tests. Bible memory will be included, and semester grades/evaluations will be provided. Text may be needed. Cost: $150/semester plus text.
Mondays, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. First semester begins August 27. Parent meeting date to be announced.

Used Curriculum Sale

Due to a busy Spring, the organizing of the used curriculum sale did not get organized. Since then, we have had many people asking about it. This year since the time got away with us, we will do things a little differently. Instead of finding times to drop your books off ahead of time, you will man your own table. Sellers will not need to label a certain way and the buyer can also negotiate with the seller directly.

Sellers: If you set up promptly at 6 pm then you may have a few minutes to shop before anyone else. Robin Brooks and Wanda Tefft will be there before 6 to let you in. Make sure you bring change! If you do not get everything sold, you can post curriculum on the TEACH blog. We will send out a separate email with instructions.

Buyers: There will be table to renew your TEACH membership and various sign-ups will be available too. (TLC, science classes, TEACH graduation...)

Formal 2012

Announcing:  One Enchanted Evening -  a formal event for TEACH students in
10th - 12th grade - to be held at Community Bible Church in Lawrence.


The formal will be held on Friday evening, April 20th from 6:00pm - midnight.
All attendees must be homeschooled, in grades 10th, 11th, or 12th, and members
of TEACH. Expired TEACH memberships can be renewed in time for the formal.

TEACH alumni are welcome to attend if membership is current.

Each student will need an advanced/paid reservation for the formal.
The ticket price is $30.00 per person and the deadline for the reservation is March 30th.
There will be a late fee of $10.00 added to reservations made from March 31st through April 10th.
No reservations will be accepted after April 10th.

The evening will begin with a social hour from 6:00 - 7:00. Dinner will be served at 7:00.

This formal evening is planned for the enjoyment of everyone and we ask that
each attendee plan to use modesty as a guideline for choosing formal attire.

Ladies: No cleavage, no backless dresses, no plunging necklines or short
hemlines. (no shorter than 2 inches above the knee)

Gentlemen: Long-sleeved dress shirts with ties, dark dress pants, or suit,
and dress shoes.

NO casual wear. ALL attendees MUST stay in formal attire throughout the
entire evening.


The evening will begin with a social hour from 6:00 - 7:00. Dinner will be served at 7:00.
Menu: Garden Salad, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Cheddar Potatoes, Fruit Kabobs, Croissant Roll,
and a Dessert.

A group activity and an evening of dancing will follow the meal.

A photographer will be taking posed and random photos throughout the
evening. Each student will receive a CD with these photos.

October's Social Night

October's social night has been added to the calendar.  It is a "back to the books bash" and we are encouraging all the students to come dressed as a character from a favorite book you have read, or decorate a mask in a theme or character of a favorite book.

There will be a prize awarded for the most creative costume and/or mask.  Masks can be as simple as something made with construction paper or made from a paper bag.  Or you could head to the craft store and purchase a "blank" mask to decorate.

If you have any questions, be sure to ask.

So here are the details:

When: Friday, October 7th - from 7:00pm - 9:30pm.  Please have students picked up no later than 9:45.

Where:  The Morris Center - 146 Indian Ave. - Lawrence

Who:  TEACH members in grades 7th - 12th.

What to bring: Please bring a snack AND a 2-liter bottle of pop, juice, tea, etc.  In the past, we have had a few events where there wasn't enough food or drinks to last through the evening.

Also, it is time to stock up on items that are used for our events, like paper products - so we are asking everyone to bring $3.00 to help cover the cost of these items and door prizes for future social nights.
